My work explores the intricate relationship between painting, photography, and the ever-evolving realm of media images, reimagining the traditional concept of still life. Titled "Still Life," my work captures still moments within the dynamic world of photographic reproduction, challenging conventional interpretations of image consumption and blurring the lines between the tangible and the illusory. Drawing from diverse photojournalistic sources and digital reproductions, my paintings confront the transient nature of contemporary visual culture, prompting a re-evaluation of the impact of media on our collective perception and historical memory. I intentionally use the illusionistic and tactile properties of painting to emphasise interactivity, offering a startling duplexity to the contemporary image—comprising the subjective and the objective, the internal and the external, the real and fictitious.

By incorporating sculptural elements and exploring the interplay between artwork, viewer, and space, I aim to create a dynamic interaction that transcends traditional two-dimensional representation. This approach seeks to disrupt the continuous circulation of images, stimulating a synesthetic engagement of the senses and fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between the artwork and the viewer's lived experiences. Integrating distinct forms of sensory experience, the work explores the enigmas of aesthetic practice and the appearance of implicit subjectivity, addressing a dichotomy in how we process and consume information. My art aims to unravel the complex threads that weave through each image, capturing the essence of our contemporary media landscape and offering a profound reflection on the fluid nature of visual representation within the fabric of our interconnected world.

Amy Powell (1995, Wales.) lives and works in London. She received her BA from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2019. Subsequently, she obtained a Distinction in MA Fine Art: Painting at Camberwell College of Art, University of the Arts London, in 2024, having been awarded a scholarship. In 2015, she received the Placement Bursary, enabling her to participate in a six- month placement program at La Trobe University in Australia. In 2019, she was a recipient of the Eversheds Sutherland Prize for Painting. Since being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Addison's Disease in 2020, Powell has become a passionate advocate for disabled artists. Her journey and achievements since her diagnosis have inspired her to promote inclusivity and accessibility within the arts, working to ensure that disabled artists have the opportunities and support they need to thrive. In 2021-22, she was an Artist-in-Residence at Woldingham School in Surrey, actively integrating creativity into contemporary professional practice by conducting painting workshops, tutorials, artist talks, and seminars. In 2023, Powell exhibited in the Hari Art Prize, Belgravia, London; other group exhibitions of the same year include Xhibit 2023 of Arts SU and the Chaiya Arts Awards.
